Re: [artshow_photo] Re: CS5 vs. Lightroom or PLUS LightRoom

Rod,

Note that I have all my images in one folder, within which is a folder
for each year, within which is a folder for each day. (Most recent:
2011-01-29.) The dates are calculated based on the EXIF values. This is
all setup as part of the import, and is another way to help keep things
straight. I.e., if you find one image from a shoot, using the folder
navigation allows you to easily display all of the images from that
shoot (although you may have to choose two or three folders together for
a shoot that spanned several days).

The problem with older files going into the catalog is this: If the
files related to one shoot were not all camera files, their dates may
not all be the same and may get imported into multiple locations. In
this case, when I go to add a set of images from before LR I check it
out to find a single file that definitely has the right date on it
(probably a reject, as it won't have been edited at all) and import that
one alone using the normal rules (move file and add to catalog). Then,
noting the folder location, I go back to Windows Explorer (or Finder, as
the case may be) and manually drag the rest of the related files into
that LR folder. Then I do another import *from* that folder, telling LR
to add to catalog but leave files in place.

It's much easier for images that enter the workflow after you start
using LR, but if you only add the important shoots (shoots for former
clients or discontinued products for current clients or weddings of
people you know to be divorced aren't really needed) as the need arises,
you'll soon find that everything you actually want to work with is
probably already in the catalog in a matter of a few months. I have DCR
(Kodak RAW) files back to March of 2007, but I have folders in the LR
catalog going back to 1999.

A year from now you'll have a hard time understanding how you lived
without it, although I suspect the same applies to Aperture users.
