But it amazes me how many patrons assume that if they are paying cash, you
won't report it, so they shouldn't have to pay tax. I gave up trying to
argue this point with people, so at some shows I just suck it up and pay the
tax on cash sales out of my pocket. I've even had several people who want
me to pay the sales tax on a credit card purchase; it's a bargaining
technique. (I flatly refuse; I have to give away enough to the credit card
companies as it is!)
Having just gone through two audits this year (one with the IRS and a
three-year audit with the state tax commission), I am very glad I have been
above board and not tried to hide cash sales. It's hard enough keeping
track of the numbers when you're being honest; I can't imagine trying to
keep all that straight if you're trying to keep track of actual sales vs.
"official" sales...!
