I'll have to tip my hat to some of the lefty blogs (not sure if this is one)
they have had good rational discussions of the reactor problem. A major
disaster no doubt but not a catastrophe. Billions of dollars down the rat
hole tho.
One of them had a description of the peak 'high radiation' levels. They were
about 100 mRem/hr at the reactor. And have been decreasing ever since. To
put this into perspective radiation follows the inverse square law, so at
100 meters distance that 100 mRem/hr becomes 1 mRem/hr and at 1000 meters it
becomes an unmeasurable number far below the natural radiation level from
cosmic rays and such. You would get about 40 mRem from a several hour flight
in an airliner and around 75 mRem from a dental X Ray IIRC. Someone living
at high altitude like Denver picks up 50 mRem a year.
