[artshow_photo] RE: Basic Question Of "To Dry Mount Or Not

This was a timely question as I'm printing now on Epson 7890 and doing a lot
of 24x 30 prints for several clients.

I use to dry mount my work until I ran into a situation where the a
customer brought me a photograph that was dry mounted and had become damages
with a chemical spill of some kind. The photographer was not available to
reprint the image as they had passed away. The image had been printed with a
large white border and thus I could salvage the image as that image area was
not damaged. The problem was that it was not possible to remove the print
from the mounting board because of the dry mounting. I was able to cut away
the stained border area and mat the image so it looked as if it had been
matted originally.

The down side was that the back of the mounting board was stained and
eventually the chemical contamination will reach the back of the print but
that could be years from now. Also I had to add some mount board to the back
of the mat to create a level surface when the print was re-framed. I've also
had a few customers who wanted a dry mounted print they had purchased at a
festival somewhere matted after they returned home. But the mat was also
dry mounted to the image (don't ask me why someone would do that).

From those experiences I have always used hinges for my work so if the mat
is damaged the print can be re-matted if it is undamaged or the collector
decides they want a different mat/frame combination later. That is just my
personal work flow I haven't had an issue of prints getting ripples plus a
lot work now is mounted onto wood panels and ceramic & stone tiles.

I will be showing some new work at River Fest in Algiers at the old Mardi
Gras World site in New Orleans April 2-3. Lots of good jazz, blues, zydeco
and food.

The only problem I've heard about with the archival dry mounting is that if
the print gets very warm it can slip. Working in Florida this gave me pause
and so I have stuck with the hinge mounting.

Benjamin,

I've always dry mounted my prints. They just look so much better,
especially on large prints. My largest size is just over 20x30, which
requires pressing in sections, because the print is bigger than my
