Benjamin - your questions and concerns are again valid, but truth be told, there is no crystal ball (nor human) that can predict how a show will turn out. There is no real correlation between how much you gross to how many patrons walk the show. Yes, it makes logical sense that one can make more money from a bigger crowd, but it just isn't always so. Until you lay your money down, and hang up your work, you'll never know for sure. It's a crapshoot at best, and a gamble for sure.
I've done better shows with lousy sales, and el cheapo shows with great sales. I've grossed $2800 at a local show, only to gross $35 at the same show two years later.
Continue to dismiss the "expect to lose money the first few years." You have just as much chance of making money as you do losing it. Of course, you're upfront expenses (display, equipment, initial material costs, etc) may keep you in the red, on paper, for a while - but still, it is not unreasonable to expect a profit per show from the gitgo. If your images have appeal, you'll profit.
Bottom line - You can study, read, speculate, and do all the homework you want. Now, pick a show or two, apply, and go from there. Good luck.
