It sounds like it may be taking you to the import dialog upon detection of the memory card

If so, you can try the following change to see if it solves it

On the pull down menus on the top of the screen

select "edit"

select "preferences"

and then on the general tab under the import options deselect the first item titled

"show import dialog when memory card is detected"

If you make the change, lightroom will no longer detect memory cards automatically and you will need to hit the import button and select the memory card location for future imports.

Every time I plug any memory into my computer Lightroom automatically takes
off! Is there an option somewhere that I can turn that off?

Easy. Just shoot from an angle so you see the edges of the frames on
the third wall. You don't have to see what's in the frames.

There are shows that want to see all three walls of your canopy.
