I respect your opinion Fred but no I have to disagree with it in certain areas (my opinion :-) )
Cameras and lenses have improved? Cameras as in digital abilities have improved, but lenses no I see no evidence of that.
And a camera is simply a tool, it does not take the pictures.
Many people have the illusion of taking better pictures because amateur tools seem easier to handle, but does this improve picture taking qualities in the professional arena - I don't think so, it merely dilutes the pool.
Top end pictures are still truly stunning and still require the skill they always have.

Not sure what this proves. My car is capable of 130 mph but that does not make me a good racing driver. Actually if I were to attempt to use my car to its full potential I would be more likely to kill someone :-)

It is easy to look at many great and feted photographers and say similar things. The only difference is that it was more difficult to do everything 100 years ago in the sense that the equipment was bigger and needed more effort. that lots more people can 'do it' because equipment is easier to handle does not necessarily follow that all those people will be also gifted photographers - far from it as we can see by all the dross published out on social networking sites.

'Some' I fail to see 'many'. Perfect focus is a skill that is learned. As a sports photographer using long lenses on manual for most of my career, I can assure you that it really is a skill. Auto-focus was seen a s a boon by those at the end of their careers with eyes that inevitably failed, but for those of us in our prime it actually took some control away, which was a bad thing - and still is.
Digital capture has improved immensely and my own control with it - I absolutely agree with you there.
