From the one year that I did the Shaw show, I can say that the traffic was certainly never "crowded," but the attending patrons seemed to be mostly buyers. The residents of Historic Shaw have money, and were not afraid to part with some of it. It was one of the very few $3000+ shows I've done in recent years.
The buyers seemed to favor contemporary art over rustic and/or landscape-type images, plus larger, ready-to-hang pieces at that. My next door neighbor, who was a contemporary acrylic artist echoed the same sentiments, as he too had quite a lot of jingle in his pockets at the end of the show. I had well-above-average sales in larger, off-the-wall items (again, mostly contemporay fine art-type images), which always plays an important role in padding overall sales. Several of my pieces in the 24"x36" range found new homes, leaving me with some bare walls by the end of the show.
I traveled 6 hours from Nashville to do the show, and will do it again, one day assuming I can get juried back in.
I personally like the St Louis area, as my sales average is much better there than in the Southeast.

I don't know how many of those went over to the Shaw Fair, but speaking as a local, both the Shaw Fair and Clayton Art Show draw well (weather permitting of course).
