Thanks for your response. You have a point re setting your own prices. However, I'm seeing it from a similar point of view to photojournalists, who are struggling to get work (in the UK at least, and probably worldwide) thanks to the rise in numbers of amateurs with vaguely capable digicams who are only too happy - and foolishly flattered - to give their images to the media for free, just so they can boast to all their friends about having been published. Skilled photography just isn't valued in the media anymore, even if it still is by their readers.
At art shows, there are loads of exhibitors who are used to and dependent upon continuing to make a living from their work, and their livings could be damaged by newbies and part-timers coming in with undervalued, underpriced work. I wouldn't like to hurt other artists when we should be supporting one another.
It'd be interesting to hear views from some full-timers who do make their livings this way.
