Do you live within striking distance of Brighton? So do I. I can tell you about a number of shows that might be worth checking out.
I know exactly what you mean about the cost, though, especially when you have no guarantee that you'll recover it through sales. So what about sharing the cost with another photographer?
I don't know whether it would be better to share with someone covering the same or similar/related genres, or someone doing completely different stuff.
If the idea interests you and we are geographically close enough, maybe we should discuss it privately?
