Thanks for the responses, although I had tried all given suggestions prior to inquiring. I did consider re-attaching my old G4 just to print, but physical space near my 7600 is limited, and not enough room for two towers and two monitors (my new 27" monitor will not work on my older G4). Even my calibration and new custom profiles with a Color Munki were not in the ball park for printing.
Good news - I downloaded a trial version of the ImagePrint RIP from Colorbyte. It is the solution.
Bad news - the RIP costs $1500 for a 24" printer. Since the RIP takes over all control of the Epson, as it is in effect a new driver, I can only presume that the required newer Epson printer driver (v8.19) was the problem somehow. The print quality with the trial RIP is the best I've ever had with the 7600.
My old 7600 is also exhibiting nozzle issues, and am not sure how long I can continue using it - the black nozzles seem to spray some residual dots past the actual printing area, so anywhere I have black ink laid down shows some "pepper" spray in the adjoining area.
Bad news - in addition to having to buy the $1500 RIP I will soon have to replace my 7600 printer anyways, and right now that means a new 7900 unit, which ain't cheap either.
Good news - the RIP can be used with any new Epson I buy, 24" or smaller. So the idea of purchasing a 17" or or even a 13" printer instead has crossed my mind. The idea of printing smaller at home, and farming out bigger sizes might be something to consider, especially since I've started offering gallery wraps now. And those are all farmed out.
