Vince, Phil, Jim - Thanks so much for your input, advice, and suggestions. As much as the Canon's price is inviting, I do think I will stick with an Epson 24" printer, preferably the 7900. But first I will purchase the Imageprint RIP. Even though I don't understand the layout yet, it still produces the finest prints I have ever run through my 7600.
Right now my concern is that I can get a few more miles out of my 7600 (I've got a few unopened 220ml cartridges that I'd like to use up beforehand). One of you suggested I might be able use the 7600 cartridges in a 7800 of 7900 printer, but I don't think so. Even if the cartridge sizes and computer chips were compatible, the ink is different - Ultrachrome in the 7600, K3 in the 7800, and HDR in the 7900. I'm not sure that a mixture would work, and it might throw color management helter skelter.
On to my other major printing issue which is the fact that I've been experiencing an over-spray from the black nozzles. Wherever there is a black edge running perpendicular to the print head, the black nozzles spray just a little past it, leaving a residue of tiny black dots, much like someone sprinkled black pepper on the paper. If I can't resolve this issue, the 7600 will be as good as dead, as I'll not be able to print on it anymore, even with Imageprint.
If anyone has any clue as to what's happening with these nozzles, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
