[artshow_photo] Re: When does a photo stop being a photo?

Yes, in the end it really doesn't matter. I am certainly not meaning to speak ill of his work as he did have some interesting pieces. Also, in the greater scheme of things I do not consider that direct competition as it is wildly different from what I do and most likely my work would appeal to a different group of people.

The only way I would really be offended by the collage type of work is if any of the images used were taken from stock sources. As that is really impossible to tell you just have to hope the artist is ethical. That of course is a whole other issue and for the most part all that I have seen exhibiting at true art shows seem to be ethical. Now craft shows, that is a whole other world. The last craft show I did I was actually setup next to a lady that was selling glasses that had sports teams and well known brands like Coke and Harley Davidson logos painted on them. That is clearly a violation on copyright laws. But anyways, I am getting off on a tangent.

Matt, I did about the same as you did at Santa Fe. Covered my booth fee and most of my travel expenses. From the several other photographers I talked to they did about the same or worse. Overall I heard a lot of people saying this year had been much slower than the previous years. Oddly though, most of my sales at this show were of my larger prints and small framed pieces. As a volume game the sales just don't seem to be there right now.

I only have one more show scheduled for the spring season and that is Lakeland in early May. Hopefully things will be a little better at that event. At least my travel expense will be lower on that show since I can drive home each night. Those travel expenses have been what is really killing me lately.

You know, there is one other instance as far as competing in shows under the category of photography goes that I wonder about. There is one established photographer that I have seen that works with his wife to paint the frames his photos are in to expand the photographic image about 6 inches on all sides. At this point you are looking at a photo and a partial traditional painting. In an instance like this should the photographer be forced into a mixed media category? As Larry stated earlier the categorization of shows is kind of loose so it probably depends on the show. But ethically, is it fair to have a mixed media piece compete in a photography category? I suppose this is why some shows just do 2D and 3D as the categories.

Other then some cropping, and some minor color correction if I spend more then 5-10 minutes on a picture it is probably not worth the effort. There's the occasional exception to that rule, but those are the sorts of moments that I won't be able to just come back another day for but even then it's more fixxing a color correction nightmare then replacing large sections of a picture. Lee claimed she doesn't even do that much...shoots jpeg, and prints what she shoots. No photoshop. How true that is I cannot say(says she never has any dust specs) but for the most part I'll bite.

He does all of his own lighting, he sets everything up meticulously knowing how he's going to put it together in the end. So yes, he can say he's a photographer but no, he's no longer selling photographs in my personal opinnion. But that's a can of worms that will be openning and re-openning itself for years to come.
