[artshow_photo] Re: When does a photo stop being a photo?

I don't chronicle what I see. Most of what I sell most of my customers have seen anyway. They like local shots, whether they are locals or visitors. So they could have snapped their own. What I try to put on paper is what I saw in my mind's eye or what I wish I had seen. I often try to show them what they didn't notice.

First, the camera is NOT like the eye -- as we all well know. Its dynamic range is MUCH less. But besides that, when we look at a scene we are able to abstract, to focus in. When it's on paper, it has to be focused for the viewer. I also believe that my eye sees edges and texture better than my camera captures it even after sharpening. For that reason I often enhance edges and textures.

Cameras today can do so much in the camera that to me it is ridiculous to say something came directly out of the camera or only this or that type of processing was done. My new Sony can even do in-camera HDR. Cloning out? Is it illegal to remove a dead leaf before taking the picture? Then why is it wrong to do it afterwards?

Where to make the cut it seems to me is impossible to determine. And to what purpose?
