Thank you all for the help. Logic told me it didn't make sense to defy gravity
and that the attachments/hinge points should be on the top but inexperience told
me to 'ask the experts'!

Generally you should mount only along the top side regardless of length. Hinging
the mat the backing is less of an issue but I usually go ahead and do top side
there as well. The image mounting should only be two places and can be to the
mat or the backing. We have lots of info about mounting on our website with pics
