I believe you have to sell what you believe in and what represents you as a photographer and artist. If you go around guessing what might sell, you will be chasing your tail and stressing yourself out as well as selling yourself short as a photographer.
What I've found that sells is originality. Plain and simple. If you have a very original image that no one else has (or not a similar one), those are the types that sell provided it is an appealing good photograph. If someone wants to buy a photo of the Yosemite Valley, they will buy it from whomever has the lowest price. And often a buyer is looking for something they like in a certain color to match their interior decorating or to fill a certain size space.
Same goes for submitting images for jurying into shows. Submit originality otherwise you'll blend in with the other photographer submission.
