[artshow_photo] Re: What are your bestselling subjects?

Normally I don't respond much to this kind of inquiry, simply because there really is no good answer. If someone out there actually knew what subjects sell best, he/she would write the book, which we'd all buy, then retire wealthy.
In reality, no one knows who will salute your flag until you raise it up the flagpole.
But I did want to mention two very successful photographers I know, and what they sell, for what it's worth.

1. "Joe" is the most successful photographer I know on the circuit. He sells b&w prints (from an 8x10 film camera no less) of iconic places and buildings in and around Nashville. The only downfall to his subject matter is that he is limited to where he can sell. He sells mostly small, loose prints (5x7, 8x10, 11x14). He hangs very large framed images on the walls, mostly for eye candy. I've seen him sell quite a few very large prints (40x50) and large frames as well, but the meat of his show sales come from the volume of smaller loose prints that leave his booth.

2. "Clay" is the other of the two most successful photographers I know. We cross paths 3-4 times per year, and set up near each other at two shows. Clay works in color, and his subject matter is mostly birds. Lots of "backyard" birds, some exotic and wild birds also. In addition, he has a good selection of bears, horses, "cute" critters, and even snakes. Clay is retired, and travels around the Southeast doing shows. Clay offers matted prints in the 8x10 ~ 16x20 sizes, plus the same in metal frames.

In addition to being "competitors" at shows, I consider both Joe and Clay my friends, although they do sweep the floor with me at any given show. They have a couple of common threads which may account for their sales success - Each is competent in post software processing, and each is extremely outgoing and pleasant. No snobbery or arrogance whatsoever. Between their individual subject matter and their friendly, pleasant dispositions, these guys sell, sell, sell.
