It has a lot to do with selling of goods. If unemployment is high, those making more than average are likely to also have diminished overall pay (less overtime, maybe pay cuts or freeze on raises, no bonuses).

You have to be joking, right? With gas at $4 a gallon do you really think people will be buying campers which will reduce gas mileage for whatever truck they are pulling it with by half?!
In a recent USA Today there was a poll that said that with gas price so high, what are your summer travel plans? about 30% said travel somewhat less than last year, and another 30% was travel significantly less than last year, and another 30% was travel same as last year. Can't be buying luxuries when food prices are so high and gas prices are at all time highs!!
