Hello,
It seems this never goes away. I just spent several days and a quite a few
emails discussing this with a client I print for.
Some states and the US Copyright Office define LE "
A "work of visual art" is —
(1) a painting, drawing, print or sculpture, existing in a single copy, in a
limited edition of 200 copies or fewer that are signed and consecutively
numbered by the author, or, in the case of a sculpture, in multiple cast,
carved, or fabricated sculptures of 200 or fewer that are consecutively
numbered by the author and bear the signature or other identifying mark of
the author; or
(2) a still photographic image produced for exhibition purposes only,
existing in a single copy that is signed by the author, or in a limited
edition of 200 copies or fewer that are signed and consecutively numbered by
the author."
The origin of LE prints is the results of print makers who plates became
degraded as they made prints, eventually no more prints could be made from
the plate.
I'm simplifying here but the advent of offset printing technology, digital
printing and the global market place has changed what some perceive as LE's
. It is not uncommon to see limited editions of 1,000-10,000 in multiple
sizes on various substrates.
Some collectors will not purchase a LE is the edition is over 100 and has
multiple size.
That being said some people believe that it's okay if they make it in
different sizes, crop it, use a different paper/canvas/metal, toned vs not
toned, etc.
All I can say is to think carefully if you decide to LE's, your reputation
and integrity can be at stake depending on your market. and your goals.
Personally I do LE's and have no problem with keeping my edition's small
100, 50, 10 & 5 depending on the artwork. I have sold out of some editions.
But then I'm not concerned with selling the same image forever, neither am I
trying to artificially inflate the value of my artwork by doing LE's. Some
of work I do lends it's self to LE; but that's me. The artists I consult
with and print for have to make their own decisions about LE's. I just want
them to have a understanding of how and when it may be appropriate to do
LE's. There have been artists who have been successfully sued by their
collectors and galleries for creating editions in multiple sizes or taking a
previous open edition image and re publishing it as a LE.
4. To do limited editions or not to do...

I do not really like the idea of limited edition prints. Especially not at
the level I'm currently at. However, some of the shows I was looking to do
this year required "original works or limited editions from a master image".
One of these was supposed to be a very nice state level show.
Obviously, any images I've already sold a copy of cannot be made into a
limited edition. So, I would have to start with my new works. Do limited
editions all have to be the same size, can each size have its own edition,
and how can I do this without coming off pretentiou
