Good grief, yourself! Most people read their e-mail in date sequence, 
 and if you get a lot of e-mail it's pretty easy for the last twenty or 
 thirty messages in the inbox to not be visible. Ergo, one might 
 reasonably reply to a message from 10 am at 4 pm without having seen a 1 
 pm notice that the the thread has been declared closed.
 
 And yes, a typical day's messages here fill three or four screens. This 
 is not the case for the lists which are auto-filtered into their own 
 mailboxes, but it happens that this list and one other stay in my inbox, 
 so I could someday be "guilty" of the same crime without knowing it.
