[artshow_photo] RE: Limited Editions

Hey,

We are not book publishers unless you count hand made artists, which I make
or your publishing your coffee table book of your trip to Skull Island. Book
editions are revised with new, chapters, text or information or the author
died and cash in time. Most book even photo book are normally not limited
editions. I'm in several that went 2 editions but now are out of
print.Though there have been some high end collections of images thet were
published over the years in limited editions; I have a friend in one and the
book was so expensive most of the photographs couldn't afford one.

That being said Limited Editions are just that; a finite number are created.
Coming out with a 2nd, 3rd or 4th edition that has been re-sized, cropped,
rotated, flipped sideways, toned, split toned, printed on different papers,
canvas or glass or printing negative 16a, 15a or file IMPG1088.DNG instead
file IMPG1087.DNG or file IMPG1089.DNG does not change the fact that it is
not a limited edition anymore. People will go to great lengths to sell their
best seller for ever and I get that.

Some keep harping about how they hate LE's, they don't want to be limited on
what thy can sell, it's a way to artificially inflate the value etc, etc.
Then don't do those festivals or do not make you best sellers the LE if a
show doesn't require all your inventory to be LE. But you never know what's
going to become the best seller and that's what a lot of people are afraid
of; making the wrong choice. I have several pieces I made LE's and now that
the editions are sold out or close to being sold out, I could wish I had
made them open editions or larger additions but I don't. I just go make some
new images. But then I"m not dependent on festivals anymore so It's not a
big issue for me.

But I do care about honesty with my collectors and galleries when I say it's
an LE it is an LE. I always hold on to 4-5 prints from an edition for
retrospective exhibitions of my work, my personal collection and as a little
retirement fund for my golden years so to speak.

Until the Feds or the states have uniform statues and enforce them and I
don't see that happening anytime soon, this question is going come back
again again with no resolution.
I was able to hold out for 2 years before jumping in on this. I'm going to
try to hold out for 3 years and the next time I deal with the question I
hope to teaching in a college photo program somewhere.

I've decided to finish my formal education and get that MFA. If all goes
right I'll be heading back to the class room at age 65 next fall.

I limit the number of prints I will produce, usually 25. A limited edition
is a
print run. As in books you may have a first edition, second edition etc. but
you
must print all at the same time with all the same settings. There are laws
in
many states that have requirements for limited editions. You should check in
the
state you are selling in. By selling a limited number of prints I may print
each
size, crop etc. I choose as needed without deluding anyone as to what that
print
is. I also tell my customers that the photo may be used in advertising etc.
By
doing this I am honest with my customer.
