[artshow_photo] Re: Pricing at Wells St Art Fair

In my personal opinion, I don't see the appeal of the same ole same ole European color photographs. I think they are overdone and have saturated the market. Regardless, photographers would not keep showing them if they were not selling.

I have been doing shows for about 10 years...approx. 20-40 shows a year and long ago, I came to the conclusion that the majority of the art festival attendees and buyers DO NOT appreciate creativity and fine art. They want something that matches the couch, reminds them of the past (their own travels) or reminds them of all the things they may have wanted to do but can't (so they might as well buy a photo/painting of it)

If you are unique don't expect sales to equal someone like Scalan.

But for pricing, I believe photographers need to start or continue to hold themselves in higher regards. A painter would have no issue asking 2k for a 20x30 painting yet photographers think this is crazy for them to ask anything similar. Look at your expenses. Look at the time it took you to find that perfect picture in the perfect light. Look at equipment prices (how expensive really is it to buy paint and paint brushes when compared to the price of ink, photoshop, cameras and the right printer)

Granted, if you decided to have editions of 500, your 2k for a 20x30 may not attract buyers but if you lower that edition number to a much lower number, then enjoy being able to ask more for each image. There is common belief that if something doesn't cost much, it must mean it is of worse quality.
