[artshow_photo] Re: Selling prints without mats

> What are your thoughts on this? It is my intention to aim more for the fine art collectors market rather than the average person who might want a nice photo on the wall, but, of course, I would like to sell to that client as well. Any thoughts or suggestions are really appreciated!

For collectors, a white mat adds value, even if they throw it away when framing. And yes, there are a few photographers just selling loose prints in a bag, with lots of white space to simulate a mat. Either way, sign the print on the front, in the border.

Personally, I like the look of a matted print, and it insures that the print is handled properly before framing.

Trying to offer add-on mats for an upcharge will open a can of worms. Just like offering many different styles of frames, you will spend too much time with customers who can't make up their minds, possibly losing sales to others who need help selecting an image. Better to spend your time in the booth selling your work than as a framer. Unless, of course, that's what you like to do.
