Which is part of why I have begun using refillable ink cartridges that come from Ink2Image.com. They have them available for most Epson printers. It's kinda messy, but I have saved upwards of 75% on my ink costs.
They send you three empty cartridges for each ink color your printer uses, along with a "sleeve" into which the cart is fitted. The 'sleeve' is what has the chip on it the Epson printers will 'recognize'.
And before anybody jumps on me saying, "But using third party inks voids your Epson warranty", I say, "No, that's not true." check out Ink2Image's website - they'll help you fight Epson if Epson claims it's not going to fix your printer because you used third party inks.

Don't forget the ink that doesn't end up in the keepers.
Not only is there the prints that you throw away for
whatever defect/reason there is also (On Epson printers)
the Head Cleaning cycles that chew up ink. It's all
cost of doing business and has to come out of sales.
