No, photographers are not book publishers, but to the extent that they
publish editions of any kind, they are emulating book publishers. They
use the English term "edition" and should expect that English speaking
clients will understand the normal definition of that word, they should
not presume to create new definitions. If you publish a limited edition,
this says only that the specific edition is limited, not that no other
edition will be created." END QUOTE

Not in the art world. Photographers are not emulating book publishers or CD
producers, they are emulating printmakers or print publishers. It is
expected of books and music that there will be as many published as there is
demand.

But in the art world, now and always, limited edition legally means that
only ONE edition of xx prints will be produced forever more. Legally, that's
what it means. You can make that edition xx-25,000 if you like but, again,
check the law pertaining to particular locales because they are very
different.
Traditionally (not legally), the maximum accepted by galleries and museums
is 250, according to Art Law, published by the Practicing Law Institute.

And although the number of prints in the edition is up for endless debate,
making another limited edition is viewed (again, in the art world) as
blatantly misleading the collector.
Nobody says you have to limit editions but making up terminology is
something left for the mega print/repro publishers, not any self respecting
artist IMHO.

Making a limited edition of every size is just peachy as long as all is
disclosed in a COA. But to call something a limited edition and then print a
second edition is not acceptable. If that is what someone wants to do to
reserve a potential best-seller, then print a "first limited edition" and
then collectors are aware that there potentially be a hundred more limited
editions coming. But then why bother? Just stay away from shows that require
limited editions and all set.
