Re: [artshow_photo] Re: Limited or Numbered Editions

that would be wrong too according to the art experts

here's a quote from a section on different types of prints
http://www.ifpda.org/content/collecting_prints/glossary#digital-print

"When artists use computers to create and manipulate their works, a large-scale ink jet printer can be used to print the works. These complex printers use a sophisticated print head to disperse the ink on the paper in a fine mist in order to deliver a consistently toned image. A digital print is only considered an "original print" if it was created by the artist to be realized specifically as a print. A digital print which is a copy of a work that originated in another medium, such as painting or drawing, is a reproduction and therefore is not an original print."

here's how a HP consumer desktop printer works if you want to see a similarity in terms

"Inkjet printers print by spraying a fine mist of ink from the print head onto the paper"

the printing aspect is obvious as to what they mean. what about the computer part?

strictly speaking a digital camera is a computer. many digital cameras these days can send photos wirelessly to a printer removing the need to touch a third device at all. some even have basic retouching built in.

that makes the camera the source of the original in a literal sense

thus, a photograph printed out from a digital source is as original as an original painting is.

and it's being put in the same category as lithography is.

as an aside, you might notice the term Giclee does not appear anywhere on that page. that's telling

> My only real issue here with your COA is the use of the word "print" In the painting/art world, a print is considered a reproduction. As a photographer, always use the word "photograph". What we offer are photographs printed on canvas, paper etc. They should not be confused with reproduction prints.
