Re: [Bulk] [artshow_photo] Print Bins

A few years ago, I became obsessed with building "ideal" print bins.
In research, I determined that for an average height person (5'6" - 5'8"), the "ideal" comfort zone when standing and browsing should measure about 42" from the ground to the top of the print. This height allowed patrons to browse with minimum physical strain, plus little or no bending downward or stretching upwards. I believe patrons who are comfortable will stay longer.
What my "ideal" bins came down to was building a separate free-standing bin for each size print I sold. Each with the same height (measured from the top of the print @ 42"), but with the "floor" where the print rested adjusted accordingly. For an 8x10 print this would place the bin floor @ 32" above the ground, and for a 16x20 print, the floor would be placed @ 22" above the ground.
When standing, the bins and prints all have a uniform height, so the patron does not have to bend or stretch for each different size print.
I have found this to be ideal to this day. I paid a good sum of money to have them built by a carpenter, as I have no skills in that area. He insisted on 1/2" birch plywood. They were beautiful, but extremely heavy. So much so that I ceased using them after just one season.
However, I recently purchased a couple of Pro Panels new Quick bins, thinking along the same concept of ideal height, and have been quite pleased with them. They are height adjustable, as they attach directly to a pro panel, and can be placed anywhere up or down the panel. I place all one size prints in one bin, and place the bin so the top of the print is still 42" above the ground. The height of my 8x10 bin is much higher off the ground than is my bin for 24x36 prints, but the tops of the different size prints are all 42" above the ground.
Try it sometime. It makes a huge difference in comfort when all your prints are the same height across the top. When picking out your choice of bin styles, always consider the final height of the top of the print, and strive for uniformity in this height for all your bins.
