Free sample works with cookies or potato chips. Free sample in photography might work if you are marketing pictures to a high volume user at a few bucks per picture. I am interested in licensing for hundreds of $'s and free samples are neither needed or expected. Nobody ever gave me a free sample of a computer, phone, shoes, shirt etc. Just samples of cheap consumables like chip dip.
Free use can be used for promotion. For example I gave free licence for a cover shot for a new magazine. This turned them into a repeat client. It can work and there is a time and place for this.
When I read that we should be giving our pictures away or the only way to make a living is to teach photography I
disagree.
Only pointing out that this method of marketing wouldn't interest me. And I'm suggesting a method of marketing that has worked for me .
