Actually according to NOAA to determine the distance of lightning, divide the number of seconds by 5, so if you see lightning and it takes 10 seconds before you hear the thunder, then the lightning is 2 miles away from you.

Further, you can have lightning without thunder - so if you only rely on sound you can be in trouble. As lightning can branch out miles ahead of a storm, and once you hear the thunder you are already in striking range, waiting to hear the thunder can make it too late for you to reach safety.
