Hi Alison - Yes, the vinyl top is darker, but not significantly, in my opinion. I don't think there's a top made that is as bright as the poly tops, nor that spreads the light as smoothly and cleanly as poly. I often had to wear sunglasses inside my poly-top booth! However, to date, the darker vinyl top has not been a big issue, but could be on a darker cloudy day under a shade tree.
The major advantage to the vinyl top is it being water-proof. Furthermore, due to its weight and thickness, rainwater will not pocket in the slopes as it will with a poly top. The poly tops come from the factory as "water-resistant," which doesn't last long, and unless you routinely apply a water resistant coating to the top, it will condensate inside. Couple that with the ease in which they develope pinholes and leak, the darker vinyl still is more desirable to me. I paid $350 for my vinyl top (John Mee Canopies), and about $400 for the 4 vinyl sidewalls, including extra zippers on each wall.
The only downside to the vinyl is the weight. They ARE heavy.
BTW - I have noted that the vinyl top is also a bit cooler than the poly top on hot days.
