[artshow_photo] Re: Newbie Wonders - How Much Inventory to Start out and What Quality Mat Board?

As far as mat board goes we have not had good experience with Bainbridge. I haven't tried Crescent so I can't say.

We sell everything matted and framed. We use all acid free materials and prefer the Rising Museum Board. It really isn't that much more than the non-acid free. In small quantities you can find it under $10 a sheet. So, for 11x14's we get 6 to a sheet and for larger size prints obviously less. Out of all the mat board we cut Rising gives us the most consistent results. It is also free from some of the imperfections we have seen in Bainbridge products. We also use acid-free foam board and a minimum of conservation clear (i.e., UV protected) glass for the frame. We produce our own frames and buy our molding in large quantities to keep the costs under control.

I visited a show today and the photographers had lots of matted prints in their bins - but these seem to be folks who have been doing this for years.

Also, I am waffling between using a Crescent mat board with plain foam core and a Bainbridge Alpha Rag with acid free foam core - there is about a $250 start up cost more to go with the museum quality. But, then again, I want to aim for the fine art market more than the decorator. So, is it important to offer this? I guess I am suffering from a bit of sticker shock at start up costs and am wondering how you all feel about these two issues -
