Interesting point. As recently as fifteen years ago, value was a major selling point for stock.
We boasted about how a company could use stock photography instead of assignment and
save a bundle. These days, stock agencies (with a handful of notable exceptions) actively
discourage photographers from submitting work that would command this sort of attention.
Happily, the result of this is a resurgance of high-end assignments, but few of us are
prepared to work in that market.
One thing I find interesting about the world of nature photography and its marketing culture is
how important hype is to making sales. There are actually celebrity nature photographers
who get most of the sales - here in the States they have TV shows and blockbuster
workshops. Is this something the rest of us should be thinking about too?
