There are other examples of lenses that do this. As I recall, the
Olympus 14-45mm f3.5-5.6 is shortest at around 18mm or so and got
longer towards either end. Also, one of the Canon normal zooms
(either the 28-70mm f2.8L or 24-70mm) does this. Bear in mind, zoom
lenses don't just move single elements around as they zoom: some
elements get pushed out, some get pulled back in. Different optical
designs result in different behavior.
