While these particular pictures are from an iPhone, a rolling shutter
is hardly unique, and it is not even limited to electronic systems.
The focal-plane shutters on most SLRs or DSLRs can get the same kind
of effects as the exposure time actually means "amount of time a given
part of the sensor is exposed to light" and not "total amount of time
that when any part of the sensor was being exposed to light.
