This is a well known scam. What gets me about the scenario is banks are every so fast to get money themselves but it is shocking to learn that it takes weeks for checks to actually clear.
Even credit card isn't safe because the buyer can change their mind about the purchase claiming fraud or something. A friend sold a camera on ebay. Buyer paid by credit card through paypal. Buyer told credit card company to get her money back and they did. Paypal said not my fault, you didn't ship to the "verified address." I thought there was negotiation on such an event, but apparently not with paypal. Of course my friend couldn't get the person to pay and he was out a camera.
