I'm guessing part of what you are looking for is fall color. Of course, the colors are determined by the amount of rain over the summer, the recent temperature, how the stars align, etc. You might find this link useful:

I was there last year, one week earlier than your trip. We headed to central Vermont and were lucky to arrive in that area at the peak of color. We meandered quite a bit so I would probably have a difficult time finding the location of some of my photos again but we had a great time. The day we left was the day the rain & leaves began to drop.
Again, if it is the color you are looking for, remember you can drive to them. If you see green leaves, head north if you see no leaves, head south.
