I started slow and still am not in many shows (primarily because of the economy). Is there a local art league you can join? Photography club? Many people in those will be selling in one way or another. I started that way and with small local shows. Local art leagues here have shows, some of them juried, which gives you some experience.
I tried out some little local street events and found out that people would buy my work! After a year or so of that I was asked to join a local co-op gallery which was forming, and that has been a very interesting and educational experience, and we are making a little money as well.
As far as how to's? Buy books and read online. I bought a book on matting and framing. I observe what other people do and talk to them about what they do.
Right now I doubt there is much money in it because of the poor economy. Established artists in this area who rely on their income from their art work are having to teach or find other jobs to make ends meet.
