Re: [artshow_photo] Re: Pre-Newbie

I don't see gloom and doom, but you have to be smart about what you
are doing. Don't be desperate to get out there, take your time and do it
right, otherwise you will find doom and gloom.

You have to look at the market, flea markets are where people get rid of
"junk" they no longer want or seconds they buy inexpensively and resell.
Is that how you see your art? People expect it to be almost free. Is
that how you want others to see your art? Actually in the Midwest, Flea
markets are doing pretty poorly, some of the big ones locally are almost
empty inside.

You are better off going to a Farmers Market where people go to buy the
best of produce from local farmers. . .see the correlation? Best of and
local? That is a much better association than used or second best? Check
out the local coffee houses.

Look at the local church markets and fund raisers that will be going on
for the holidays. Don't set yourself up for failure and frustration by
not looking at the market and who your customers are. You're not selling
widgets, you're selling you heart and soul as an artist. What is that worth?

Also make sure you are paying yourself. Otherwise you're better off just
going out and having fun taking photos and donating them to your
favorite charity events. There are 3 or 4 large breast cancer and other
events going on here, looking for artists to donate work or paint
bricks, or secret canvases. . . You get lots of great publicity, feel
great about supporting a cause, without all of the frustration of having
to show and sell, if recognition for your talent is what you seek more
so than a real job.

Join art guilds, and photo clubs, have fun, show with them. Network and
learn.
