I've never saved the camera's file name. Since I can never think of enough unique descriptive names, and besides, I don't think it's best, I've always named my digital images by date/time. Through various image importers, I've been able to maintain the same naming format.
I don't care which camera took an image when importing into LR because I can easily tell afterwards. Furthermore, renaming by date/time means that photos taken near the same time show up together when I sort by date/time, which is usually the way I look at my images.
My two cameras don't "step on" each other with names, but it wouldn't matter if they did.
