Re: [artshow_photo] Re: My First Show.

Before entering art shows with my photography I walked many an art fair.
I was guilty of often closely examining other photographers work. I wanted to see what they did
and figure how they did it. I did feel a twinge of guilt when leaving without buying anything.
In my limited exhibition experience patrons have done the same to me. They ask you how
you took the picture and want all the details. One of the biggest problems is that almost everyone
has a digital camera and they our beautiful photographs but think they can do it themselves, so they
don't buy. I think that work that is unique or has outstanding color or reminds people of a place they have
been will tend to do better. Just some random thoughts.

I like your last comment Rod, An older man asked me recently how to tell if a picture was art. Of the top of my head I said "if it makes you feel something, even just curious, it's art. If you look at it for more than five minutes or go back to look at it again you should buy it." He liked that and said that was going to be his new guide.
I wish I could have sold all those pictures looked at for twenty minutes or come back to 3 times.

Hi Aimee

Yea - I have people come in and say nothing - I figure they are shy and don't want to be hassled. I do listen in to their conversations and read between the lines on comments.

Did you have smaller works that could leaf through? On the GOOD side is that you actually had people come into your place. That to me means you had something to offer just not what they were looking for. Also perhaps THAT particular show did not have the people you were looking for.

I've found that every show seems to have a different feel on what people like and don;t like. One show I'll have one particular image drawing people in and the next it's not even looked at.

Compliments are good and bad - you have to be realistic - are they polite compliments or actual compliments! I get both and then I have to weed out the polite ones - they don't count.

Also - I wish I could put a stop watch on every image. The longer someone looks the more they like it. I would love to have a timer on each image, make my job easier.

I sold nothing, but did have a good number of folks coming through my booth who had a lot of good things to say about my landscape photography.

In your experience, is it typical that people enter your booth and don't even look at you or say hello? I just found it annoying that most of them came in and wouldn't even make eye contact, though they had things to say to each other about the photograph.
