Rod, one word of caution
when you get into "I'll frame this for ya", there
is NO end to the unique wants of any and all customers.
I met a photog once who confessed that he mainly "resold fancy frames with
pictures in them", his own words. He started out offering different frames
in his booth, then he moved on to bringing frame corner samples to shows and
custom framing, now he has customers bring their own frames and it is HIS
task to match them perfectly to their needs. So watch that framing can of
worms very carefully because it could potentially eat a large chunk of your
time.
My own approach is to say something along the lines that I try to frame
simply to arrive at a compromise between neutralizing the "dressing" as much
as possible and enhancing the "meat" as much as possible. I joke with my
customers that "if I would have known THEY were coming, I would have framed
differently" and they pretty much get that you can't possibly frame to begin
to match every one of your customers' taste and décor. I frame neutrally for
most pieces and my larger pieces I frame as elegantly as possible to enhance
the piece.
Aside from that, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Target, Walmart, Dick Blick, and
Aaron Brother's just to name a few, all have frames in those 12-by sizes. I
know because for a couple of years before I started framing from scratch
with wholesale materials, I bought nearly all my frames from Michael's.

Thanks Micheal - that's what I THOUGHT you meant.
Steve - so you would put a 8x12 image in a 12x18 mat? I was looking at Clear
Bags and 8x12 into 12x16 seems the way they go! Always looking for
suggestions - I know Hobby Lobby has many frames for 12x16 (just came from
there). Oddly JoAnne Fabrics have nice frames for 8x12. Weird. Except it
takes like an hour to chack out!
I really dislike 11x14 as that size seems so claustrophobic - tried that
ratio and I just feel too squeezed.
NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THEM!!
