You guys are making this too complicated.
I don't rename the files. As I shoot I keep a
log with important data about what I'm shooting.
I code this with the name shown to me by the camera.
Renaming would make the log useless.
I don't download by camera. I pull all memory cards
and use a card reader -faster that way. Never mind
which camera took the picture. Each memory card
is marked with a magic marker when I buy them
A, B, C, D etc If you need more than 26 then AA,BB etc.
I create a folder with the project name and download
each card into a sub folder under that with
name equal to the card letter, projname\A; projname\B
etc. Never a name collision. no renaming,
if you use an intelligent search tool that can search in
subfolders, you can search a million+ on-line that way.
