Getting a good print depends on having your monitor properly profiled and having a good profile for the paper you are using. Once you have those, some test prints will show you how far into the shadows you will see detail as well as how far into the highlights. First thing I do to test a paper is to print a gray ramp to see the last patches above black and below white. That gives me an idea where to start testing for detail.
