RE: [artshow_photo] Printers (and Ink, and Inking Systems) WAS: Printers

Just one more thought to add here... if you do a LOT of printing (I do cards and small prints on my Epson R340 and larger prints on my Epson 1400) you might consider using a continuous inking system or a refillable system. I purchased one of each from what had been MediaStreet.com, and which was ultimately bought out by Ink2Image.com

Both of the systems I purchased have saved me HUNDREDS of dollars in ink costs. You can even get refillable cartridges that use dye-based inks, to rival the longevity of the Claria inks by Epson.

One of the systems involves cartridges, tubing and clear plastic tubs o' ink sitting alongside your printer (that is the older Niagara CIS), and one - the newer system, involves "sleeves" with chips on them that Epson printers 'recognize' as compatible with their printer, into which you put smaller-but-tightly-fitting cartridges that you fill with ink. The item is called the Trio, because they send you the sleeve and THREE cartridges for each ink color, so that you will have one in the sleeve in the printer, and two at the ready once the one in the printer is out of ink.

That's probably clear as mud, right?

You can check out the Trio system here, and learn if it's compatible with your brand/model of printer or not:

Disclaimer: I don't work for MediaStreet or Ink2Image... I just wanted to share my experiences with their products.
Hope this is helpful to someone out there.

I started with an Epson 1800 then to a 3800 and now a 4880. I bought the 4880

only because Epson had a coupon that brought the price down to that of a 3880

earlier in the year.

The 3880 is an excellent 17" printer and work the investment. The 4880 is a

sturdier build and takes larger cartidges (up to 220ml) and supports roll paper.

If you care about the longevity of your prints, I would certainly stay away from

the dye-based inks of the Epson printers below the 2880. If you are just

printing greeting cards, then buy some sub-$100 printer.

Also the cost of inks as time goes on can be quite significant, but if it for

occasional prints, it would probably take quite a while to make up the

difference in price.

You could do a search on the luminouslandscape.com Discusssion Forum for ink and

paper costs per printer. I know I've seen some analyses there.

I have been very pleased with my Epson printers over the years.
