Hi Sally,
Well, they're old and abandoned so they probably do have issues. hehe...
Experience tells you that a certain shot could be trouble. Let's say you're shooting in a friend's house and they have a great stairwell; that shouldn't be a problem. Then you're shooting some plants in the backyard; not a problem. Next you shoot their beautiful hand-built patio complete with hot tub; now you might have a problem because even though they may have no rights to keep you from using the image they may have a personal attachment to it because it is THEIRS and it's unique. In this case it's best to ask and to get a property release just to avoid trouble. And your buyer may also want a release for such a photo. Probably not for an old abandoned building.
