Enjoying the forum posts lately. Having taken several winter trips to Alaska and now spending 6 months a year there (take a few trips to the Arctic), I would suggest two options for true warm feet protection. Bunny boots are what most folks that run sled dogs in the winter wear in AK. Produced for the military, for those that serve in the cold regions of the world, these boots can be found at a reasonable price (do a search on EBay). They are rated for -20 degrees. Another option, which I normally wear, is Sorel's. These are another popular boot up north. You can purchase an extra liner for these boots for additional warmth as well. In my prior job as a game warden and now as seasonal park ranger as well as a backpacker, have experience with Vasque, Rocky, Merrell & Asolo. They all are quality made boots. However, although waterproof, all these brands are primarily designed for hiking, not for warmth. If you buy them in a larger size and use two layers of socks (think Smart Wool brand are the best), they do provide comfort depending on temperatures. As Bernie mentions, I have also used the chemical hand warmers in boots on really cold days when I was in uniform on winter field days when I didn't have a Sorel option. I prefer Vasque and as Michael mentioned their quality has seemed to diminish after their production facility moved from Italy to China. If you do decide on either the Bunny Boots or Sorels, keep in mind that they are not suited for long-range hiking.
Blue Skies,
Ken
