RE: [artshow_photo] Mounting Wood

Absolutely right, stains will permeate the paper.

There are now acrylic based stains for wood as well as poly-crilic sealers
which mimic polyurethane but are acrylic based.

Technically, of course, they are no longer "stains" but they are sealant
colors that act and walk like stains and should seal the wood and its
harmful acids.

I guess what I would do is stain/seal the wood with an acrylic based
product. Then I would mount the photograph to a barrier-backing with
wheat/rice paste, which are completely reversible while very stable in
mounting. I would then use the mod-podge or similar to mount the backed
photo to the wood the way Salongo described. Result is best of both worlds,
a fine photograph mounted archivally onto wood and perfectly removable
should the client so wish.

Well if you mean natural stains then you might to worry about bleed thru.
Modern stains have fixatives in them. I would give the wood at least a
couple of weeks after staining to allow it to set, and then wipe the surface
down with mineral spirits or turps until you get a clean rag. Then I'd seal
it with a couple of layers of good varnish, I'd use polyurethane varnish.
That ought to seal the wood.
