Well if you mean natural stains then you might to worry about bleed thru.
Modern stains have fixatives in them. I would give the wood at least a
couple of weeks after staining to allow it to set, and then wipe the surface
down with mineral spirits or turps until you get a clean rag. Then I'd seal
it with a couple of layers of good varnish, I'd use polyurethane varnish.
That ought to seal the wood.
