Selling Stock Photography Re: Bad News!

> Seriously, as a consumer, or "reader", how interested are you in reading about the day to day image taking of the average blogger. There's a hard limit to the number of blogs I'm interested or have time to look at in a day, and none of them are "here's a picture of my dog" writings.

Ah, the lack of imagination. Sean, you are one of 7 billion people on this planet and at least a couple billion have Internet access. If I were starting from scratch I might:

1. Create a blog and focus on my local area and provide photos of interesting places that I have visited and photographed (hopefully much better than the average person could) along with some local links of interest. I would notify those "local links of interest" that I have referenced them in my blog and a link back would be greatly appreciated. They hopefully will link back and might also become followers. Of course, all images would link through to a page where I could purcase a license and a print.

2. Post free images to my blog or website with limited free use (with a link back) for small versions. Larger versions and certain uses would have purchase a license. BTW, even crappy images get used. I have noticed that a regular advertiser on CNBC consistenly uses very bad photos of interesting (that's being nice) people to draw eyes to their ads. I think the ads are about refinancing or some such thing, but they do make you look because they're so strange and bad.

3. Create a blog that focuses on highly talented photographers and artists in a particular area (of expertise) with only the very best images that are a joy to look at. This allows the blogger to lgeally trade on the names of these outstanding artists because they are being reviewed (editorial/educational fair use) and will benefit by the links to their sites. Yes, while bad photos do sell, people still like to look at really outstanding images.

4. Start a blog about people's dogs, including mine. I would go around to everyone I could find with a dog (dog parks) and ask them if I could take a photo and them give them a card or text them my blog address so they could see their dog on the world famous "Dog Blog" and would invite people to contribute their dog's photos and of course, would have a "Dog of the Day" contest with a dog joke or dog story or.... My goal would be to photograph every dog on the face of the earth and I would find ingenious ways to get my followers to help me do so.

So I'm busy and while I could come up with many more ideas I know that ideas are not rare but follow through is.

And I'll make this point, Sean: if I wanted to I could have a big successful stock photography company; if you wanted to you could be Yuri Arcurs. ;-) We all could do better but the majority of those reading this still work a day job and answer to the man and I believe there's no reason for that in this day and age, as long as you are willing to work hard and never give up learning new ways of doing things.
