[artshow_photo] mounting on wood, plywood, mdf, luan

Have done a lot of mounting to wood, done with adhesive and coated canvas, coated with 2-3 coats and usually put that into a frame, no glass. Now I am trying to come up with a different look using electronic digital mattes to feel like a matted piece. Would like to mount that on wood without a frame and am wondering how I can finish the edges of the wood? Have tried painting prior to mounting, then trimming the canvas, and its looks weird. The best look is to mount on aluminum and trim, letting the edge of the alum. show. Does anyone have a different idea?
Thanks, Mike Woodward
